Councilman Mathieu Slams Mayor with Online Forum Post

With friends like these? Republican Councilman Jim Mathieu had some harsh words for Mayor Quattrocchi on a recent post on nj.com. He said "We have a lot of work to do and our mayor has failed us in many regards." The Councilman made the comment about a fellow Republican under the screen name jimmathieu on 01/12/12. Mathieu also took a passive shot at Democrats saying: you have to ask yourself at this point: "What is the difference between the Republican and Democrat leadership in Garwood? So far, I don't see much of one, but I do see a lot of disturbing similarities. Mayor Quattrocchi did not respond to the salvo, despite posting on nj.com in the past.

Garwood Swears In Re-Elected Council Members at ReOrg Meeting

At Garwood's reorganization meeting, the first of the year, Democratic council members Sara Todisco and Louis Petruzzelli were sworn in. Todisco is starting her first official term as a council member after being appointed last year. Petruzzelli is starting his second term as an elected official. Both said they were thankful to retain their seats on the borough's governing body.

In Print: Garwood was a Good Neighbor to Cranford in 2011

Irene threw a sucker-punch at Cranford last year. And by all accounts, Garwood was there to back-up its neighbor. For example, the Cranford First Aid Squad was forced to evacuate its flood prone headquarters near the Rahway River shortly after the storm. Where did they go? Garwood. The first responders re-grouped and worked out of Garwood's First Aid Squad building for months, according to nj.com. Community groups in Garwood also planned fundraisers and various drives to help out Cranford.

Popular Music School Schedules Show at Garwood's Crossroads

School of Rock is a Montclair, New Jersey based music academy that says it tries to teach and inspire kids to "rock on stage and in life." This month the school is coming to Crossroads on North Avenue. The youngsters will be playing a tribute concert to Led Zeppelin. The show is set for January 22nd from 12:30pm-2:30pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for 17 and under, according to the school's website. The first School of Rock was founded in 1998 in Philadelphia. There are 69 schools in the US and Mexico, the site says.

In Print: Since 1951, Serving Garwood Residents Bravely

Pat DiFabio is well known in the borough, he has served the community for 60 years as an active member of the Fire Department. He was recently honored for his decades of service, according to a report in the Suburban News. Firefighter DiFabio was given a ring by Fire Chief Wayne Frew and was also presented with a resolution by the New Jersey State Firemen’s Association. Firefighter DiFabio joined the Garwood Fire Department in 1951, the report says.

Resolution Time in the Borough of Garwood, NJ

2011 is coming to close and while it's time for many to make personal resolutions for the New Year, the community as a whole can also set some goals for 2012. Here's one suggestion: re-subscribe to civic responsibility. While many residents of Garwood may have a sense of civic pride, there seems to only be a few that take an active role as a citizen. Let's all take a closer look at what we can do to make this town a model for the rest of the state. Plant a tree, sweep a sidewalk, spruce up your curb appeal, help out a neighbor, attend a council meeting, volunteer, help organize a town-wide event, shop local, donate to charity, thank a police officer, a teacher, or a member of the fire department, join a civic club, dine local, fly an American flag, buy a ticket to the 8th Grade Play, don't speed, or just take a que from the yellow guy on Center Street and smile. These are just a few suggestions, maybe one or two can make it onto your resolution list. Have a healthy and happy New Year!

'Midnight Mass' Scheduled at 10pm at Garwood's St. Ann's

Two years ago parishioners at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church in Garwood noted that the traditional Midnight Mass on Christmas morning was lacking in attendance. A year later St. Ann's scheduled an earlier version to celebrate Christmas at 10 pm. That new, earlier time is yet again the plan for the 2011 Christmas Season. St. Ann's will celebrate the mass of midnight, oddly enough, at 10pm. For many Catholics midnight is a traditional time to celebrate Christmas. Some in the parish community noted that the Mass of Midnight is just too late for local families with young children.

Former Republican Councilman Anthony Sykto is moving out of Garwood to be closer to his work in Trenton, but, he gave an impassioned speech at the last council meeting before heading south. Sykto said he is worried that Garwood's future is in doubt and wished for less pettiness in the borough's political arena. Sykto also singled out the conversations on the Garwood Forum at nj.com, calling them, amongst other things, mindless and nonsensical bickering.

Garwood's Auto Pay Raise Vote Makes for Odd Bed Fellows

Republican vs. Republican, Democrat vs. Democrat. The issue of automatic pay increases has made for some odd alliances, and has pitted allies against one another. The issue is whether or not the borough's taxpayers should be on the hook for automatic raises for non-union employees who work for the municipal government. Tuesday's 4-2 vote nixes the bumps in pay, but Republican Mayor Patricia Quattrocchi has threatened a veto. That irked, and surprised, Republicans on the council who said they thought the Mayor was on board. Meanwhile, Democratic Councilmen Louis Petruzzelli and Keith Sluka sided with the Republicans on the council. Four police dispatchers and four borough office employees will take the financial hit if it ultimately passes, according to a report on the Clark-Garwood Patch. The next council meeting is scheduled for January 8th.

That brings us to our newest poll question: Hey Garwood: Should non-union borough employees be entitled to automatic raises?

In Print: Garwood Athletic Field Complex Could Cost Taxpayers 800K

The borough council says the estimated $2.1 million dollar project to construct an athletic complex at the Little League Field may cost the Garwood Taxpayers about $800,000, according to a report in the Westfield Leader. The paper also takes a closer look at an issue with the turf company that will be used at the site, according to the report the borough could have potentially saved thousands if the borough's consultant Kinsey Associates would have worded the bid for the project differently. The complex site was approved last year by the planning board and is currently being paid for through various streams of funding. The massive overhaul of the Little League Field is expected to include new indoor and outdoor amenities.

Busy Santa Plans December Visit to Garwood's Northside

Santa's got a tight schedule leading up to Christmas Eve, but, he's finding time to stop by the Industrial Center of Union County. Santa Claus will be at the Garwood Free Public Library on Saturday. Mr. Claus will arrive promptly at 11am. Library staff say he will be available for pictures, and of course, last minute requests from good children in town. Garwood Knights of Columbus Collecting Toys for Needy Children

The borough has a big heart, and for a small town it does its fair share to help out those in need. The Garwood Knights of Columbus often leads the pack in charitable causes. This season, as usual, the group is collecting brand new, unwrapped toys. The donations can be dropped off after 4pm on Weekdays at the Council hall on South Avenue. The Knights ask that the toys do not have a violent component. Proceeds from the drive will go toward helping make Christmas a bit brighter for children at the St. Joseph's Social Service Center in Elizabeth. Got questions? Call the Knights at 908-789-9809.

Garwood Public Library Collecting Food for the Needy

Garwood cares for those in need, and the borough library is no exception. Staff at the facility have set up their annual food drive to benefit local pantries. The library on the Northside is accepting donations of non-perishable food, liked canned items. Collection bins are located at the entrance. Proceeds from the food drive will go to the New Jersey Community Food Bank, organizers say. Groceries most urgently needed are always canned meat and fish; canned soups and stews; peanut butter (in plastic jars); boxed pasta and rice; powdered milk; infant formula; canned vegetables and fruits. Garwood to Light Downtown Christmas Tree at Borough Hall

Come all ye faithful to Downtown Garwood for the annual Christmas Tree lighting. The borough's celebrations committee will flip the switch on the centerpiece of the town's seasonal decorations at the Thomas P. Haugton Memorial Plaza, adjacent to Borough Hall, on Saturday. Garwood's Future Lies in Downtown Re-Development Site

Garwood has two giant assets that can define the future of the Industrial Center of Union County. The Casale Factory site and the Garwood train station are the lynch pins of the borough's future. The borough has designated the Northwest corner of South Avenue and Center Street as a potential Transit Oriented Development site. With some thoughtful planning and out-of-the-box thinking Garwood officials have the ability to set a new course for the town. Like Pier Village in Long Branch, the T.O.D site can redefine Garwood and become a local destination for Union County. The process and the outcome deserve concerted attention. During an economic downtown its often best to have a plan so when things look up, Garwood is ready.

Proposals Expected for Garwood Athletic Field Complex

Garwood is inching ever closer to realizing grand plans for the future athletic complex at the Little League Field. The borough council is preparing to examine proposals from contractors interested in taking on the estimated $2.1 million dollar project, according to borough officials. The site was approved last year by the planning board, but, since then, not much tangible progress has been made, according to observers. The massive overhaul of the site is expected to include new indoor and outdoor amenities. The project would also erase the Gazebo at the site, a structure some have argued is a town landmark.

The Garwood Planning Board unanimously approved the capital plan last December while under the watch of a Democratically controlled government body. Site plans say the complex may include an updated baseball field, a soccer and field hockey field, a painted basketball court, a regulation-sized bocce ball court and walking trails. Two buildings will also house a community room and a place for Seniors to gather, but no indoor basketball courts. Plans for an updated complex were first discussed in earnest in 2005.

Initial plans mulled a June 2011 groundbreaking for the site, that deadline has come and gone.

Garwood's St. Ann's Church to Kick Off Christmas Season with Choir

It's called the Messiah Sing and it's become an annual tradition in the area. The Choral Art Society of New Jersey will perform at St. Ann's Church on Friday December 2nd at 8pm. The Choir will be accompanied by the church's newly renovated pipe organ. Organizers say audience members are invited to bring scores and join in the singing of both choruses and solo sections or simply come to listen. Admission is $10. Thanksgiving in Garwood Means Shopping Local with Thy Neighbors

For much of the year holiday shoppers leave Garwood, maybe trekking to Downtown Westfield or beyond. But, come Thanksgiving Garwood is King. Neighbors from Westfield and Cranford flock to the borough's food stores. Kings, ShopRite and Pathmark are jammed with "once a year" foodies. Shopping Local is easy to do on Thanksgiving, but, learn to love the additional company. Eat well and enjoy time with your friends and family. Garwood Commuters Get First Look at New Rail Map

NJ Transit recently unveiled a new rail system map to replace the decades old version that had graced station platforms and rail cars. The new map still uses ORANGE to denote Garwood's Raritan Valley Line. The new map is not to scale like the old one making Garwood look much closer to Manhattan than it actually is. Maybe that will help home values! Only time will tell.

Anniversary: Garwood's 'Steel Beast' Removed 2 Years Ago

It was on a clear November day that the century old water tower at the Aeolian Plant was erased from the skies over Garwood. That day was November 17th, 2009- 2 years ago. The tower had stood in the borough since 1900. Back in 2009, 365 asked in an online poll whether residents thought the Water Tower was the Eiffel Tower of Garwood. The Tower got a mixed response in that poll, 53% said it was a landmark for the borough, while 46% said no. At the time 1 reader suggested sprucing it up and painting Garwood on it. In covering the dismantling project the Star Ledger referred to the Tower as a "hulking landmark" but, said its fate for demolition was set when borough officials complained of its decaying appearance and fretted about concerns for safety. While many it town did love the historic structure, Mayor Dennis McCarthy called it “an eyesore.” And the borough clerk, Christina Ariemma, called it "useless" in an article in the Cranford Chronicle. Despite the maligning from officials 365 received a reader submitted poem entitled Goodbye Water Tower. In it the anonymous writer called the tower a "Steal Beast" and remarked on its importance to the borough and its metaphorical connection to America's once powerful manufacturing sector.

The steel beast built tall and strong, a service to the industry it once belonged. The safety of the workers so they won’t be wronged, was the Garwood water tower.

One hundred years ago it was raised from the surface to stand watch. Yet stayed on beyond the life of the plant it looked after. It lived there with no apparent purpose ‘cept to be a structure that we all came to know and yet not really acknowledge what it accomplished in the past. The plant and tower now sleep together.

It was a symbol of America’s might. With products made and always right. Stood tall thru day and night, within the sight of all residents below.

It was the Garwood Water Tower.

There comes a time, when we stop looking back, the cherished thoughts still within our minds. Yet the march of time always changes things, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse, but change we must call progress, none the less. The proud strength that once was will never be. Piece by piece, it returns to earth. We must say goodbye to a friend we never really knew, but was always quietly there.

We must say good bye.

Small Business Saturday Returns to Garwood this Month

It's an initiative sparked by an American Express advertising campaign, but, it's a worthy cause that hopefully has the potential to catch-on. For the second year Small Business Saturday is being promoted as way to support local merchants in towns across the country. American Express is asking consumers to shop local on November 26th by spending money at their favorite local stores and help fuel the economy. The credit card company says it best: "When we all shop small, it will be huge." The small business ad campaign was launched last year. Shop Local!

Garwood Hosts Veterans Day Ceremony and Memorial Dedication

For the first time in at least 3 years Garwood held a ceremony to mark Veterans Day on Friday. Garwood officials used the day to dedicate the borough's new Purple Heart Memorial at Georgiana Gurrieri Memorial Park. The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the armed forces, or their families, when a service member is wounded or killed. Garwood doesn't typically hold a ceremony to commemorate Veterans Day. To those who have served: A Sincere Thank You.

NJ's Anti-Bully Law: A Year Old Measure in Garwood

Reacting to high profile incidents of bullying New Jersey's lawmakers passed a tough bill in November of 2010. Since then much of the burden on anti-bullying measures has been put on local teachers and school administrators. Some of the toughest wording in the new bill included disciplinary action for administrators who fail to take action when bullying takes place. School employees are also mandated to file a written report with principals within two days of observing or being made aware of an act of bullying, according the bill.

Garwood voters have re-elected Democratic incumbents Sara Todisco and Louis Petruzzelli. The two beat Republicans challengers Carol Ann Kearney and Steven Blaufeder.

Election Day 2011 pits Republican and Democratic Council candidates against each other. Borough voters are being asked to pick two candidates at the polls. It's an important election for local Democrats who need a win to retain a viable presence in the Borough Council. Polls open up at 6am and stay open until 8pm. Garwood Public School Full of Schedule Changes in November

Students must really love November. There are a ton of days off and a slew of half days. The first days off are for a teacher's in-service and convention. Lincoln School will be closed November 10th and 11th for that purpose, according to the district's website. Parent-Teacher conferences also take place this month. The meetings are scheduled for various times during the day to accommodate the busy schedules of parents. November 17th Lincoln will have a delayed opening for morning sessions, on November 18th and 21st students will be dismissed early for afternoon conferences, and finally on November 22nd there will be another early dismissal for evening meetings with parents.

And that's not all, of course, school will be closed on November 24th and 25th for Thanksgiving, with an early dismissal planned for November 23rd. Arthur L. Johnson High School students also have off for Election Day on November 8th.

It's a trend that's spreading to many business owners. Local merchants are posting their own commercials on You Tube, instead of spending money to put them on the airwaves. Last year the student newspaper at Arthur L. Johnson High School was posted online for the first time. And this year the school has continued that new tradition. The October paper is now up on the schools website. The well written Crusader features a story about the fall pep rally and an extensive article about new teachers at the high school.

Garwood Library to Host Guitarist

The Borough's Library on the Northside will play host to Peter Biedermann, a well-regarded guitar player and music composer. The performance will take place on Tuesday, November 1 at 7 pm. Historic Snow Storm Strikes Garwood in October!

Snow before Halloween!? The borough and the surrounding area saw a substantial amount of snow accumulate on its streets. The historic blast from Mother Nature is the first major storm in quite some time in October, according to some, the 1920s. The National Weather Service warned Saturday evening that 8-12 inches could fall.
The premature start of Winter comes just a year after a particularly harsh season in the borough and the rest of Central Union County. This year was predicted to be a snowy winter, but, someone should tell Mother Nature it's still FALL out there!

There were multiple reports of power outages and fallen trees in the area. The Raritan Valley Line was suspended between Union and Newark Penn Station for some time during the freak snow storm.

Garwood's Democratic Council Members Fight to Hold their Seats

Garwood's youngest elected official, 22 year old Democrat Sara Todisco, is on the ballot come election day. She filled the seat vacated by former Democratic Councilman Jonathan Linken 8 months ago. Sitting councilman Lou Petruzelli is also up for re-election, another Democratic seat that is up for grabs. Garwood voters are being asked to pick two candidates in November. It's an important election for local Democrats who need a win to retain a viable presence in the Borough Council. If both Todisco and Petruzelli loose only 1 council member would be left representing the Democratic party. Two local Republicans Carol Kearney and Steven Blaufeder hope to keep the GOP winning streak rolling in Garwood.

Garwood voted purple in 2009 picking 1 Republican and 1 Democratic candidate for Council. But, in 2010 Republicans swept the polls. In Print: Garwood's Bulk Pilot Program Nets Surplus

Bulk Garbage- two words that have dominated much of the political discourse in town over the past year. But, it seems the pilot program, with fees, was a success. The Garwood Council reports the bulk pickup program saw a $1,797 surplus, according to a published report in the Westfield Leader. 87 permits were purchased in town at $55 dollars a pop, stats show. The town had estimated that nearly 100 homes were going to take part. The bulk pickups were made on September 29th and 30th, but, residents had to register for the pickup by August 15th. The elimination of free bulk garbage pickup was discontinued for budgetary reasons.

The Northside's Crossroads is in the paper again. This time the Star Ledger is taking a closer look at the recent renovations at the landmark on North Avenue. The writer said Crossroads is again "redefining itself." Owner Lee Frankel told the Star Ledger, "Each town has a place to eat and drink, but we attract with art and atmosphere." The Star Ledger article on nj.com also reminds readers where the name Crossroads comes from, a reference to Robert Johnson's "deal with the devil" legend.

Garwood to Undergo Expensive Sidewalk/ Tree Project

Brace for impact. The borough is embarking on an expensive renovation project that will see major improvements to many Northside and Southside locations. The Garwood Council is currently shopping around for bids to begin the much needed work. Borough officials say the project will repair crumbling sidewalks and prune street trees. The work will also include the take-down of shade trees that have lifted sidewalks. Sidewalk reconstruction will also repair any damage that was inflicted by Irene. All the trees that will be cut down or pruned are owned by the borough, reports say.

Garwood's Halloween Parade set for Oct 31st in Downtown

Slow down! The borough's youth will be out and about in their Halloween costumes on Monday, October 31st for the annual Lions Club Halloween Parade. The yearly spectacle will step off from Willow Avenue and Center Street in Downtown Garwood and march north. The parade will get going at 7pm. After marching beneath the Center Street underpass the little monsters will head the the Northside's Lincoln School gymnasium where a costume contest will ensue. The parade and costume contest are always a big hit in town. The Lions Club of Garwood generously organizes the event.

A security guard had asked two residents from Woodbridge to leave the Crossroads parking lot on October 9th, when they ignored the Police were called, and the men were arrested, according to a report on nj.com. The security guard told police the two were drinking alcohol and had refused to leave after being asked to do so. One of the men arrested was a minor, according to the report.

Thief Steals iPhone at North Avenue Business in Garwood

The victim was just trying to get orange on, but a thief had another idea. According to a report in the Cranford Chronicle, Police say an iPhone was stolen at the Hollywood Tans on North Avenue on October 10th. The report says the owner left the phone in a room of the tanning salon and returned to find it stolen. The iphone was valued at $400. Garwood's Lincoln School, ALJ, Adopt Crime Stoppers Program

It's a program intended to make it easier to report a crime, or tip about a future incident, at the borough's schools. Students at Lincoln School on the Northside and Arthur L. Johnson in Clark can take part in the first ever Union County Crime Stoppers program. Crime Stoppers is the first formal and comprehensive school tips program in New Jersey, enlisting the assistance and support of students in the fifth- 12th grades to keep county schools and communities safe from crime, according to the Union County Prosecutor's Office.

Any Garwood student, parent, teacher or school staff member who has information about a crime or dangerous activity can anonymously contact Campus Crime Stoppers to let them know what they know. Tips can be given for various crimes including: vandalism, drugs, gang activity and even bullying.

Picture it: The Garwood Italian-American Festival

Many towns host festivals, and in New Jersey a large number of those are Italian-themed. The idea behind a classic Italian feast is usually based in religion, and most of the time, is used to celebrate a Christian Saint.

Sophia: "Picture it! Garwood 2012!"

In nearby Clark the town is holding its 5th Annual UNICO (Unity, Neighborliness, Integrity, Charity, and Opportunity) Italian Feast this weekend. The celebration is more secular than most Italian festivals in New Jersey.

Garwood, like Clark, has a large Italian-American population and a similar feast may be a good draw for Downtown. A festival could also help build some local pride. October is Italian American Heritage Month- so it would be an ideal time to acknowledge the contributions of many local residents.

Some ideas:

The St. Anne's Festival:
The borough's Roman Catholic Parish could string festival lights on North Avenue and use their large parking lot for food, rides and games.

The Garwood Italian-American Festival:
The Knights of Columbus or another volunteer group could stage a more secular feast that could be held at the Little League Field. Just don't forget the festival lights!

The Center Street Italian-American Festival:
Or- how about one right down Center Street in Downtown. The festival could provide some much needed attention to the strip.

Poll: Do You Ever Take Garwood's 59 Bus on South Avenue?

It can take you to Dunellen, Downtown Plainfield, Downtown Westfield, Downtown Cranford and points east, like Elizabeth. If you work in Newark it will take you there too, albeit, more slowly than Garwood's Raritan Valley Line.

The 59 bus runs along South Avenue in the borough and is often seen with plenty of empty seats. It runs relatively frequently, but, many times you don't see people getting off in Garwood. The bus doesn't pull into the Port Authority in Manhattan like North Avenue's 113. So the question is: Do you take the 59 bus?

Garwood's Lincoln School will be Closed for Columbus Day

On October 10th, 2011, the borough's Lincoln School will close to mark Columbus Day. But, teachers will have to report to school, according to the Board of Education.

Italian-Americans make-up a large percentage of Garwood's population and to some Columbus Day is meant to commemorate the achievements of the state's largest ethnic group.

The borough's library and post office will also be closed.

According to the Order Sons of Italy in America here are some reasons residents should reflect on Columbus Day:

Columbus Day recognizes the achievements of a great Renaissance explorer who founded the first permanent European settlement in the New World. The arrival of Columbus in 1492 marks the beginning of recorded history in America.

Columbus Day celebrates the beginning of cultural exchange between America and Europe. After Columbus, came millions of European immigrants who brought their art, music, science, medicine, philosophy and religious principles to America. These contributions have helped shape the United States and include Greek democracy, Roman law, Judeo-Christian ethics and the tenet that all men are created equal.

Garwood and Westfield Anchor Central Union County

Nobody would argue with you if you said Elizabeth and Plainfield have seen better days. Poverty rates are also higher in Roselle, Linden and Rahway. Crime continues to be a nagging problem in many areas east of the Garden State Parkway.

But, Central Union County remains a stalwart for the middle class and a place families still flock to.

Florida-Based Musician Says Garwood Inspired his Life's Work

His name is Jim DiBattista, and while he's currently promoted as a Florida-based singer/songwriter, he says much of his inspiration comes from his days living in Garwood.

DiBattista says, "I grew up in Garwood and a lot of my songs have been inspired from my time living there." He points to one song in particular that is Garwood-inspired entitled: The Doowrag Flyers.

He notes that, "Doowrag is Garwood spelled backwards."

FBI Report: Borough of Garwood Sees Spike in Robberies

The FBI's annual crime tracking numbers have been released and one local statistic has seen an increase. According to the FBI's Uniformed Crime Report there were 5 robberies in Garwood in 2010, the highest number in at least 10 years. In 2009 there was only 1 robbery in the borough, and in 2008 there were none reported.

The number of burglaries in Garwood has also inched up. In 2010 there were 8 burglaries reported, up from 7 in 2009, and 6 in 2008. While burglaries were up, they are down from 2006 when the FBI reports there were 11 of them in town. 2010 burglary stats are also much lower than 2002 when 16 burglaries were reported.

Overall, crime is considered to be "low" in the borough, according to the FBI.

As for other noteworthy crime stats in 2010, the borough saw no murders, rapes, car thefts, or acts of arson, according to the 2010 FBI report.

Garwood's Child Poverty Rate Increased Slightly Since '00

The Census Bureau's latest statistics for school district poverty finds that 6.5% of all children aged 5-17 live in poverty in Garwood. That figure is up from 6% in 2000.

However, Garwood's poverty rate for children aged 5-17 remains low, much like most of the towns in Union County west of the Garden State Parkway, data shows.

According to census figures there are approximately 598 school-aged children in Garwood, 39 of those kids live in poverty, figures show.

East of the Garden State Parkway (and Plainfield) remains a different story. Cross under the highway and you enter towns with much higher rates of poverty for school-aged kids. Roselle Park, Roselle, Linden and Rahway have elevated rates of poverty. Elizabeth and Plainfield remain the county's poorest cities.

Mayor: Shop Locally in Garwood, Support Downtown Merchants

Garwood's Mayor Patricia Quattrocchi is trying to give borough merchants a boost after Irene, and she's using the town's website to try and make that happen. In post on garwood.org she says local businesses on North and South Avenues were heavily impacted by the storm. She says "they went without power for 5 or more days and they would really benefit from the community's support."

Mayor Quattrocchi has made it a point to be very publicly supportive of residents, business owners and employees of the borough since the storm. Earlier this month she showered praise on her borough's staff after calling the town's response to the storm a "successful" effort.

Garwood to Collect Bulk Garbage

The borough will launch its bulk garbage pick-up pilot program this month. For a fee, the borough will pick-up large "bulky" waste. The cost to take part is $55, according to borough officials. However, residents had to register by August 15th. Published reports say 100 homes have signed up for the program which will take place on September 29th and 30th.

Massage Envy on North Avenue posted a sign telling customers it was closed from the Hurricane's power outages. But, unlike other shops it got a bit creative.

Power Outages Force Businesses in Garwood to Remain Closed

The shops and restaurants of Garwood Mews remained shuttered on Tuesday after Irene. Many of the shops placed signs in the windows. Other stores in the borough were also without power including establishments on North Avenue in Downtown.

The loss of economic activity is all the more reason to shop local when the power is restored. Business owners could use some support from residents.

Storm Knocks out Power in Garwood, Floods Center Street

Ms. Irene did a number of the borough this weekend. In the wake of the Hurricane some of the town remained without power on Monday. Published reports say Garwood Police estimate it will be two to four days until power is completely restored.

The clean up from Hurricane Irene is underway in the borough. One of the worst messes is on the Southside of town where a street lamp was knocked over.

The Northside also had its fair share of downed branches and power outages from Irene. Oak Street looked the worst after the storm. A huge tree came down onto power lines on the block. The tree also damaged the sidewalk.

Residents know it well, so does the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Center Street's Underpass is flood prone and most likely destined for closure this weekend.

Yes, that was an earthquake. According to the USGS the 5.9 hit in Virginia and rolled North across Garwood and Union County.

Garwood to Mark 10 Year Anniversary of 9/11 with Service

With the ten year anniversary of the September 11th attacks approaching borough officials have announced plans for recognizing the day in the borough. The Garwood 9/11 Memorial Service will take place on Sunday, September 11th at 6 p.m at borough hall, according to a published report in the Westfield Leader.

Downtown Garwood Remains a Bowling Mecca in New Jersey

Bowling alleys that once dotted the landscape of the Garden State are slowly disappearing. They were once anchors of the community and gathering places to meet and greet neighbors. But, despite the decline in popularity Garwood remains a staple on any self-respecting Jersey bowler's diet.

On August 6th Garwood Lanes joined other local alleys to promote the sport of bowling. The Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America set out to beat a record for the number of games bowled on a single day. Joining Garwood Lanes in the day long feat were Jersey Lanes in Linden, Majestic Bowling and Woodbridge Bowling, both in Woodbridge.

The New Jersey Restaurant Association announced its support of the bowling World Record Day. “As members of the NJRA, the Bowling Proprietors Associations are an important aspect of the hospitality industry,” said NJRA President Deborah Dowdell, according to a report on NJToday.net.

Garwood's 07027 Post Office Remains Off Possible Closure List

The United States Postal Service recently released a list of thousands of post office branches nationwide that may be closed to save money. A list that doesn't include Garwood's 07027.

In total 3,700 Post Offices made the list of possible sites to be closed, according to the USPS.

Roselle Park and Roselle are two local Postal branches being looked at for possible closures, according to a list distributed by the USPS.

The Northside's Cindy Smith Dance Studio is boasting a new addition to its teaching staff. Cara Moskal, who trained at Academy of Dance Arts in Red Bank, is now part of the team, according to a report in the Suburban News.

Moskal performed many roles for the Company of Dance Arts as well as New Jersey’s Metro Lyric Opera. While at the Academy, Miss Cara completed four Pre-Professional Royal Academy of Dance exams, and received the highest merit of Honours, the report says.

Garwood Pet Food Store Celebrates First Year on North Avenue

Garwood Receives Additional School Aid from Trenton

Trenton has increased it's total school aid package for the borough and districts across the state. Garwood will receive an additional $82,193, according to the 2011-2012 revised budget. That brings the total amount of aid from the state to $394,097. Garwood education officials were only counting on getting $311,904 from Trenton. The additional money is to be spent on current school programs, officials say.

Only twenty out of 580 public school districts in New Jersey will use the additional cash to lower property taxes this year, according to a Associated Press report.

The increase comes a year after Garwood lost 64% of its aid from the state. The borough received $229,710 for its 2010-2011 aid package, stats show.

Even with the additional funding Garwood still is far from the $640,186 it was allocated in 2009-2010, former Gov. Jon Corzine's last school budget. Gov. Christie's budget ax prompted Garwood to shutter its Washington School and end its free pre-kindergarten program.

Poll: Southside's Unami is Garwood's Favorite Park

99 Readers voted in an exclusive Garwood 365 poll that asked an important local question: Which Borough Park is YOUR Favorite.

In the end, size apparently matters. Unami Park, the borough's largest green space, garnered the most votes. Unami won in a landslide with 73% of the vote. The Little League Field came in 2nd with 13% of votes. Georgiana Memorial and Hartman Parks received 8% and 5% respectively.

The poll is unscientific and based on a small sampling.
